NELSPRUIT – A 31-year-old Police Constable has been arrested after handing himself over to the Police in Embalenhle on 11 January 2025, in connection with a double murder case. According to information received, in the morning of 11 January 2025, an elderly woman discovered two men lying a few meters apart next to the road. Both men appeared to have sustained some injuries. One of the victims was initially able to respond to her enquiries about their condition but later became unresponsive. The woman alerted the community, who then contacted the Police and other relevant stakeholders. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called to the scene and unfortunately certified both men dead. Preliminary investigations suggest that the two male victims had been hired to perform some work at the home of the Constable’s cousin. It is alleged that a television was subsequently stolen from the property, prompting the cousin to seek assistance from the said Constable in recovering the stolen item. Allegations further indicate that the Constable and an accomplice located the two victims then reportedly assaulted them and left them at the scene where they were later discovered. The Police member was off duty at the time of the incident. He is expected to appear in court soon. The second suspect involved in the incident has not yet been apprehended. The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation. A parallel internal investigation has also been instituted with regard to this incident. Meanwhile the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, strongly condemned the incident and has expressed his disappointment with regard to the alleged conduct of the Police official. “No one is above the law. In incidents where crime is alleged to have been committed, such matters should be reported to the Police rather than trying to take the law into one’s own hands,” said Major General Mkhwanazi. Ends
