The accused persons; Lungelo Mavuso (25), Thabiso Ngwenya (27), Siboniso Magagula (30), Christopher Mothibe (48) and Punuka Van Rooyen (51) will reappear in court on Thursday, 16 January 2025, for legal aid. The quintet was apprehended on Wednesday morning, 08 January 2025, shortly after committing house robbery at the farm near Koster. According to information, two males armed with a firearm and panga respectively, entered the house and attacked the farm owner and demanded money. Although they did not get the money, they robbed the victim of a wedding ring, wrist watch and Samsung cell phone. It is alleged that two farm employees who were guarded by one of the suspects outside the house, managed to escape and called for help. As a result, the suspects fled from the scene driving in the victim’s Isuzu bakkie worth R40 000,00. However, the bakkie stuck in the mud approximately a kilometre from the house and that prompted the trio to get into a getaway car, which was waiting nearby Following mobilisation of the neighbouring farmers and police, the getaway car eventually stopped and the accused got out and ran to different directions. The determined team managed to arrest all five accused and impounded Suzuki Ertiga vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed that Mothibe and Van Rooyen are residents of Koster while three other accused are from Piet Retief in Mpumalanga Province. The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng welcomed the arrest and commended all involved parties for their swift response, which culminated in the arrest and recoveries. He said that the success displayed the significance of rural safety and the E2 project in the fight against crime. Ends
