FREE STATE – Two males aged 38 and 58 were arrested in Smarties Location outside Welkom by members of Operation Vala Umgodi in Free State Province. Gold bearing material weighing at 5.68 kilograms was seized together with a garden spade, crate, basin and a bucket. A case of possession of suspected gold bearing material with additional charge of contravention of Immigration Act was then opened at Welkom Police Station. Two (2) suspects both aged 27 were arrested by Operation Vala Umgodi operators deployed along the borderline in Fouriesburg. First suspect was searched and six (6) live 9mm ammunition rounds were found in his possession. Six (6) other rounds were found on the second suspect’s body; pharmaceutical products and branded items were also confiscated from the male. Cases of Unlawful possession of ammunition; firearm part and Possession of presumably stolen property were opened at Fouriesburg Police Station. Operators followed up information about two (2) males alleged to be in possession of an illegal firearm. A search was conducted at an identified unit in G-Hostel and a Black blank firearm, one (1) 9mm live ammunition round and two (2) hollow-point rounds were found inside the target unit. Two (2) foreign nationals aged 23 and 26 were arrested for unlawful possession of ammunition and a case docket was opened at Thabong Police Station. Another team of operators dealt with human trafficking element of illicit mining by conducting a search on busses in Burten Street in Welkom. Ten (10) undocumented persons were apprehended for being in the Republic of South Africa without proper travel documents. Another seven (7) people with ages ranging between 20 and 66 were arrested in different areas like Calabria – Meloding, Rammolotsi – Viljoenskroon and Kgotsong – Bothaville for Contravention of Immigration Act.
