Media Statement HARRISMITH – Police have arrested a 43-year-old private security guard for attempted murder after he shot a community member, aged 43, at Intabazwe near Harrismith, with a service firearm when he refused to hand him over his car keys and chainsaw. It’s alleged that on 18 December 2024 at about 19:30, the complainant was collecting wood at the foot of the Harrismith Hill with his bakkie. He was approached by two security guards who instructed him to offload the wood from his bakkie, of which he did. It’s further alleged that one of the two security officers demanded his car keys and chainsaw, of which he refused. That’s when a physical altercation ensued between the two, which led to him being shot in his right knee and he was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The suspect was arrested, and his service pistol and ammunition were seized. He is expected to appear before the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court soon facing a charge of attempted murder. Ends
