Media Statement FREE STATE – Marinda Johanna Smith (57) was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI) on Friday, 13 December 2024, on allegations of fraud and money laundering. The accused applied for Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) with the Department of Employment and Labour on behalf of 28 employees. She received over R537 000 pay out. The Specialised Investigating Unit (SIU) discovered that none of the employees appearing on the application worked for her company, MJ Upholstery Free State Pty Ltd. The matter was handed over to the Hawks culminating in a warrant for her arrest being authorised by the court. She appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday, 13 December 2024 where she was released on R5 000 bail to reappear in the Regional Court on 27 January 2025. Free State Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Major General Mokgadi Bokaba has applauded the Hawks and SIU collaboration which has led to this arrest. Ends
