The court heard that on 30 July 2022 around 22h00, the victim, Mr Slabert Bhutana Mametja, was stabbed by Makofane at a place called Skhila in Lydenburg. SAPS members responded to a complaint of a fight and found that the victim had been taken to hospital in Lydenburg, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. A murder case was opened, and after a thorough investigation by the SAPS team of experts, the suspect was arrested in Burgersfort and charged accordingly. The court proceedings revealed that the victim had been stabbed with a knife. The Mashishing Regional Court finalized the hearing and handed down a 15-year sentence to Reginald Makofane. Additionally, the court declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm. Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi expressed his gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the Police Investigators, Prosecutors, and the Judiciary that led to the successful prosecution and sentencing of the perpetrator. He emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts amicably and urged individuals to refrain from resorting to violence. The Acting Provincial Commissioner hopes that the sentencing of Reginald Makofane will serve as a deterrent to others who may consider committing similar acts of violence.
