Media Statement PRETORIA – Through its high-density operations commonly known as OPERATION SHANELA, the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested 14 704 suspects from the period starting, Monday, 02 December 2024 ending on Sunday, 08 December 2024. Through OPERATION SHANELA, the SAPS continues to take a bold and decisive approach in dealing with crime in the country. These crime fighting activities include tracking operations, roadblocks, high visibility patrols, stop and searches as well as tracing of wanted suspects. All SHANELA operations are led by the Provincial Commissioner of each province. Just this week alone, the following arrests were made: ▶️ 2 857 wanted suspects were arrested. These suspects were wanted for various serious and violent crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, business and house robberies. ▶ 162 suspects were arrested for murder, majority of these suspects were arrested in Gauteng (47), followed by Eastern Cape (40) ▶️ 117 suspects were arrested for attempted murder; ▶️ 223 suspects were arrested for rape, again KwaZulu-Natal arrested majority of these suspects with 86 arrests; ▶️ 1608 suspects were arrested for assault GBH during this period; ▶️ 242 drug dealers were arrested in the past week; ▶️ 1746 suspects were arrested for being in possession of drugs, majority of these suspects were arrested in Western Cape (872); ▶️ 81 suspects were arrested for being in the illegal possession of firearms, majority of these suspects were arrested in KZN (24); ▶️ 1 437 illegal foreign nationals were also arrested during this period; ▶️ 524 drivers were arrested for drunk and driving in the past week, majority of arrests in Gauteng (141) followed by Mpumalanga (113); Under recoveries and confiscations, police registered the following successes: ▶️ 131 firearms were confiscated in the past week; ▶️ 1 675 rounds of ammunition were also confiscated; ▶️ 64 hijacked and stolen vehicles were also recovered during this week’s operations. Highlights of major takedowns and other successes include the following: ▶️ 04 December 2024, members of Tactical Response Team (TRT) in the Eastern Cape executed a search warrant in a house in Newtown, Mqanduli. They recovered police uniform, ammunition, magazines and firearms. The property owner has been arrested and is now facing charges of illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and impersonating police officers. ▶️ Police in Limpopo arrested two carjacking suspects and successfully recovered stolen vehicle, firearm and ammunition in Burgersfort on 05 December 2024. ▶️ On 03 December 2024, the Western Cape Serious Violent Crime Unit in collaboration with the Crime Intelligence arrested for four men who allegedly shot and kill five men in Mfuleni. The team recovered one rifle and three pistols as well as ammunition. Four suspects aged between 29 and 35 have been charged with murder and possession of illegal firearms with ammunition. ▶️Gauteng Police arrested six suspected ATM bombers. Detonators and firearms were recovered in this incident. ▶️ OPERATION VALA UMGODI task teams continue to record commendable successes in the country. Just last week alone, police arrested 199 suspects for illegal mining, and the majority of these suspects were arrested in the North West province. The multidisciplinary operations under Operation Vala Umgodi in Mpumalanga successfully rescued 153 illegal miners. Again, the team deployed in the North West is still monitoring ongoing operations in Stilfontein ▶️On 05 December 2024, eight suspects were shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with the police in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Nata. Police operationalised intelligence information about suspects who were wanted in connection with cash-in-transit that occurred in Mzingasi, and were intercepted while driving along the John Ross Highway towards Richards Bay. A high speed chase ensued and the suspects started firing shots towards the police. Police returned fire and during the shootout, eight suspects were shot and fatally wounded. Police will continue with their operations by asserting the authority of the state to ensure the safety and security of all South Africans and visitors to the country. Ends
