Media Statement MPUMALANGA – Willy Mxolise Mhlongo (34) was remanded in custody by the Komatipoort Magistrate Court on Monday, 09 December 2024 for fraud and Contravening the provisions of Section 83(a) & (b) of the Customs and Excise Act, Act 91 of 1964, Contravening the provisions of Section 2(1)(f) read with Sections 1,2(2),10,16,19, & and 20 of the Counterfeit Goods Act, Act 37 of 1997. On Monday, 09 December 2024, at about 02:00, information was received and operationalised regarding a suspect who was transporting counterfeit goods fromNaas, Nkomazi to Gauteng Province. The team comprising of Nelspruit based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and members of Komatipoort SAPS, kept observation. The driver of a Toyota Quantum was stopped and searched on the N4 tollgate road near Jeppe’s Reef turn- off, in Komatipoort. During the search, counterfeit goods (sneakers) valued at R 3.5 million were found. These include: 407 x pairs of Nike sneakers, 559 x pairs of All-Star sneakers, 80 x pairs of Reebok sneakers, 244 x pairs of New Balance sneakers, 92 x pairs of Converse sneakers, and 354 x pairs of Jordan sneakers. The driver was arrested, charged and appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrates Court on the same day where he was remanded in custody. The counterfeit goods, together with the vehicle were confiscated. The case was postponed to 17 December 2024 for bail application and legal representation. Ends
