Media Statement GQEBERHA – Abalone worth R86 000.00 was confiscated and a suspect subsequently arrested, after a high speed chase by SAPS Gqeberha Flying Squad and Humewood SAPS members earlier on Thursday, 05 December 2024. Vigilant police spotted a suspicious white Toyota Fortuner speeding pass them while they were busy patrolling in the direction of the M4 freeway. The members noticed that the vehicle seems to have been overloaded and liquid was gushing out from the boot. Members swiftly attempted to stop the vehicle at the corner of the M4 freeway and Walmer Boulevard Drive however, the vehicle sped off in Strand Street down to Govan Mbeki Avenue. During the chase, the vehicle attempted to push the police vehicle off the road. The vehicle continued into Sponde Road, KwaZakhele and as they turned into Booi Street, two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and managed to flee. The driver (32) was arrested and during the search of the vehicle the members confiscated 18 bags of abalone with a total of 138 units of shelled abalone, 3276 units of deshelled abalone with an estimated street value of R860 00.00. The suspect is detained for contravention of the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 sub sect 1 – illegal possession and transporting of abalone without a permit, reckless or negligent driving and malicious damage to property, and is expected to appear in the New Brigthon Magistrate’s Court soon.
