Media Statement BETHULIE – A 70-year-old rapist was handed a life term imprisonment for rape of a 14-year-old girl. On 01 October 2023 at about 14:00, the victim was at home in Newstands, Bethulie when the 70-year-old family friend arrived, looking for the victim’s mother, who was at work. The elderly man reportedly requested tea while he was allegedly waiting for the mother. After drinking the tea, he asked the victim to sit on his lap and she refused. He took out a knife, threatened her and took her to the bedroom where he raped her. The victim’s mother arrived late from work and went into the bedroom to check on her two children. The traumatised 14-year-old girl informed her mother of her ordeal and the mother took the child to Bethulie police station, where a case of rape was opened for investigation. Detective Warrant Officer Paballo Ntoahae of Trompsburg Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and the 70-year-old suspect was arrested. Working together with the National Prosecuting Authority, Prosecutor Leon Ehlers, the suspect was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of the 14-year-old girl. Ends
