Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – A quick reaction by Potchefstroom Flying Squad members in the early hours of Sunday morning, 24 November 2024, led to the arrest of Sonwabo Flenki (44), just a few hours after he allegedly attempted to kill two women. It is alleged that Flenki was involved in an argument with his 30-year-old girlfriend and another woman. Subsequently, Flenki shot a woman in the stomach and leg in the parking area of a pub at Extension 1, Paardekraal near Boitekong outside Rustenburg. He further attempted to shoot his girlfriend, but the firearm malfunctioned. Thereafter, Flenki fled the scene driving in his white Volkswagen Polo. Police in Boitekong gave a lookout for the vehicle and it was traced to Klerksdorp a few hours later. That after Flying Squad members spotted and pulled the vehicle over on the R30 road. The accused was arrested and his vehicle and a firearm were seized. Flenki appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 26 November 2024, on two counts of attempted murder. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Thursday, 5 December 2024.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena congratulated the members of Potchefstroom Flying Squad for their diligence and swift reaction that led to this arrest.
