Police detain two suspects for the possession of abalone

WESTERN CAPE – Relentless efforts to protect endangered species that are poached along our coastlines yielded success when members of the Maitland Flying Squad arrested two suspects for the possession of abalone on Sunday, 01 December 2024.

The members received information about a vehicle that is travelling on the N2 Highway with abalone. The members spotted the vehicle near Khayelitsha and tried to pull it over. The driver of the vehicle sped off in an effort to get away from the police. The vehicle was pulled over and the vehicle and the occupants were searched. They found 13 big bags containing abalone with an estimated street value of R1,3 million inside the vehicle.

Two suspects aged 32 and 39 were arrested for the possession of abalone, and will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once they have been charged.
