FREE STATE – Members of Operation Vala Umgodi in Free State; both Proactive and Combat were deployed for operational support as illegal miners continue to resurface at police guarded shafts in Stilfontein area. Six (6) suspects were arrested in possession of suspected gold bearing material in Kanana near Orkney. Males with ages between 19 and 45 were found on an open cast busy with separation process using a slope table, water and rugs as sluice mat to trap gold ores and separate it from sand. Gold bearing material weighing at 34,30 kilograms was seized and a case of Possession of suspected gold bearing material with and additional charge of Contravention of Immigration Act was opened at Kanana Police Station. A Red Toyota Tazz was stopped and searched on Leemhuise Street. Copper cables weighing at 22,20 kilograms was found inside the motor vehicle. The police then arrested the 34-year-old male. Another motor vehicle, a White Mercedes Benz was searched and sixty (60) bottles of Acriptega and thirty-six (36) Combozil Antiretrovirals were found inside the motor vehicle. Two (2) males aged 40 and 53 were arrested by the police. Cases of Possession of presumably stolen property with added charge of Tampering and damaging of Essential infrastructure; and Possession of presumably stolen property with added charge of Contravention of Medicines and Controlled Substances Act were opened at Kanana Police Station respectively. Further intelligence led the team to a house in Kanana. Explosives; Electric shock tube igniters, Connector capped fuses and Igniter cords were found inside one of the bedrooms. A large scale map of one of the local mine shaft and its small copy were also found with a number of boiler suits and safety belt. A 41-year-old male was arrested for Possession of suspected stolen property; with added charges of Contravention of Explosives Act and Contravention of Immigration Act. A case docket was opened at Kanana Police Station. All suspects will appear in Court soon. Ends
