Media Statement UPINGTON – A lengthy sentence was handed down to a 39-year-old man by the Regional Court of Upington for Rape of a teenager. On 4 December 2021, the teenage girl (14) arrived home late from a school function to find that there was no one at home. When she struggled to open the door, she asked the neighbor, who was also her father’s friend, to assist her. The accused opened the door, went inside with her, and raped her. He threatened her not to tell anyone and gave her R50-00. He promised to pay two hundred rand weekly if she does not disclose what happened to anyone. The girl reported the incident the following day, and subsequently the accused was arrested. He was sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment on 18 November 2024, and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The District Management of ZF Mgcawu welcomed the sentence and applauded the meticulous investigation by Warrant Officer Sagaria Pietersen, who worked diligently on this case, ensuring a successful outcome.
