Media Statement FREE STATE – Farhaz Uddin (20) appeared before the Welkom Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 22 November 2024 where he was convicted and sentenced for Contravention of Section 80 of the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1964. On 27 September 2023, members of K9 Unit in Welkom received information about a vehicle that was transporting illicit cigarettes in Welkom. The police then followed the vehicle, stopped, and searched it. They discovered 86 master cases of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R900 000. It was also discovered during inspection that the cargo did not comply with customs legislation. A case was registered and handed over to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Welkom for further investigation culminating in his conviction. The court sentenced Uddin to a fine of R50 000 or 60 months imprisonment of which R35 000 fine and 42 months sentence is wholly suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of the same offense during the period of suspension.
