Media Statement FREE STATE – Planned weekly operations to curb illicit mining in Free State Province continue. Combat operators received and operationalised intelligence on illegal mining activities in Phomolong Informal Settlement near Welkom. The team arrived at the identified target house and conducted a search. Suspected Gold bearing material weighing at 15,86 kilograms and Gold processing equipment; Yellow lephenduka with a stand, seventeen (17) steel balls, steel chain, steel plate used as pan, cutting torch nozzle, mercury and salt were seized. The 42 year old suspect was immediately arrested. A case of Possession of suspected gold bearing material, gold processing equipment and Contravention of Immigration Act was then opened at Welkom Police Station. Collaboration between Operation Vala uMgodi roleplayers; South African Police Service and stakeholders; Private Security Companies at Kopanong Mine is also continuing. Four (4) suspects aged between 44 and 46 who are employed by the Mine were arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband goods intended for underground illegal miners. Powder drinks, Soya mince, bread, biltong and peanuts were confiscated from the two (2) males and two (2) females who were employed by the Mine as Winch Operator, Rock Drill Operator and Contracted Underground Assistants. A case of Conspiracy to commit crime (Assisting illegal miners) and Contravention of Mine Health and Safety Act was opened at Vierfontein Police Station.
All suspects will appear in Court soon.
