Media Statement POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed a hefty sentence meted out by the Polokwane High Court, on Wednesday, 13 November 2024, against the accused, Ally Thabo Molobela aged 37, for two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder and pointing with a firearm. The sentence comes after the court heard that the accused, who was a security officer, was arrested for shooting six family members at Makgophong village in Magatle on 19 August 2023. The accused and his wife had marital issues, which remained unresolved when he then resorted to shooting his wife, their child, sister in law, and the wife’s cousin. The accused arrived at his in-laws’ homestead and started to shoot at the victims whilst in a motor vehicle in the yard. The cousin and sister lost their lives, whereas the wife, child, and other family members survived with injuries. On 14 September 2023, members of the Provincial Tracking Team, Provincial Murder and Robbery, Magatle Detectives jointly with Private Securities and Farm Watch conducted an Intelligence led operation, where the suspect was arrested at Santeng village in Hoedspruit. During the arrest, he shot himself trying to commit suicide but Police managed to disarm him. He was rushed to the local hospital. Subsequent to thorough investigations by Captain Kedibone Mathamela of Magatle Detective unit, the accused Ally Thabo Molobela (37) was sentenced to effective 35 years imprisonment as follows:
The accused declared unfit to possess a firearm. “We appreciate the wonderful job done by the investigating officer, the arresting team, and all the participants who ensured that justice prevails,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe. Ends
