Media Statement PARKTOWN – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, has applauded the members of Operation Vala Umgodi for apprehending 17 suspects during operations conducted at Protea mine, Magaliesburg on Tuesday, 12 November 2024. The team of Vala Umgodi operation apprehended 17 suspects, aged between 17 and 33, for contravention of the Liquor Act, Act No 23 of 2003 and some for being in the country illegally. The suspects are of South African and Zimbabwean origin. The police seized illegal mining equipment and goods including: alcohol, energy beverages, oxygen cylinders, an air compressor, scrap generator, a laptop, and bags containing gold bearing material as well as a jackhammer and generators. All suspects are expected to appear before the Magistrate’s Court soon. The Vala Umgodi team comprised of members from the SAPS, SANDF and stakeholders. Ends
