BITYI – In a determined effort to combat illegal firearms possession in the Eastern Cape, OR Tambo District police arrested three male suspects in two separate incidents in Bityi on Saturday, 02 November 2024. Officers apprehended the suspects after finding them in possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and large sums of cash. In the first incident, two men, aged 31 and 56, were stopped during a late night stop and search routine operation in Nkrancolo locality on Saturday around 23:30. Members attached to Mthatha Public Order Police, who were conducting the operation, stopped a Ford Ranger bakkie with two occupants. Upon searching the vehicle, police uncovered three unlicensed firearms, including an R5 rifle, a 9mm pistol, a gas pistol, each with erased serial numbers, along with ammunition and an undisclosed amount of cash. In a separate operation, police received a tip-off and arrested a 45-year-old man from Nkrancolo locality earlier that Saturday at around 11:00. He was found with an unlicensed 9mm pistol with erased serial numbers, along with ammunition.
The trio appeared at Bityi Regional Court on Monday, 4 November 2024, and is remanded in custody to re appear on 11 November 2024 for formal bail application.
