POTCHEFSTROOM – Mogomotsi Mothupi (56) appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 4 November 2024, for attempted murder and malicious damage to propperty. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Thursday, 7 November 2024. The accused’s court appearance stems from an incident reported late at night on Tuesday, 6 August 2024 at Mahumapelo Section, in Marikana. It is alleged that Mothupi, knocked on the door of his 58-year-old girlfriend’s house, accompanied by a 49-year-old woman. Allegedly, his girlfriend unlocked the door and invited them inside and they sat down. It is further alleged that Mothupi suddenly took a hammer and started smashing property inside the house. Furthermore, he poured paraffin over his girlfriend and set her alight. He then grabbed the other 49-year-old lady and raped her, whilst his girlfriend was still burning. After the rape ordeal, he instructed the 49-year-old woman to pack his girlfriend’s clothing as he is taking her to hospital. The suspect then took his injured girlfriend to a nearby bus stop, where he stopped a taxi and left. The Taxi driver took the woman to a nearby hospital where she was admitted for more than two months, until 10 October 2024. Both women opened cases against Mothupi. He was arrested in September 2024, for rape and appeared in court. He was denied bail and will re-appear before the court on Thursday, 20 March 2025.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, thanked the detectives for their tireless efforts that resulted in the arrest of the accused, who is a danger to society.
