POLOKWANE – The Makhado Regional court has on Thursday 31 October 2024 handed a lengthy sentence to a 40-year-old male accused in connection with a house breaking and rape incident committed at Gogobole Section under Tshilwavhusiku policing area. The court heard that on 17 October 2019, a 46-year-old victim was asleep at her residence when she was awakened by the sound of the door of her bedroom being opened. Suddenly she saw the accused, entering the bedroom armed with a knife. The accused who was the ex-boyfriend told the victim that he is back for revenge after being released from prison in connection with violation of a protection order. The 40-year-old instructed the victim to comply with his instruction and threatened to kill her if she did not. Suddenly, the accused raped the 46-year-old victim in her bedroom Afterwards, the accused fled the scene on foot and the victim managed to inform her family about the rape ordeal. The incident was immediately reported to the local police and an immediate manhunt of the suspect was launched. The accused was then traced and subsequently apprehended the next day on 18 October 2024. The case was transferred to Makhado Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit and assigned to Warrant Officer Charles Ralebona who ensured that the accused was never granted bail until his sentencing on Thursday 31 October 2024 on the following counts that will run concurrently. Count 1: Rape – 15 years imprisonment. Count 2: House breaking – 15 years imprisonment. The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the court verdict imposed by the Makhado Regional court. “The accused did not show any respect to the law and was out on parole when he committed this heinous crimes. He deserves to be removed from the society” she concluded. Ends
