Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Crime prevention initiatives in the Western Cape yielded successes when police members detained nine suspects on Wednesday 30 October 2024 in isolated incidents. Gugulethu Crime Prevention Unit were conducting high density patrols when they followed up on information of five unknown armed males who were seen in a spaza shop collecting protection fees. The police members responded to the information and saw the suspicious men in the vicinity of NY 102. They approached the men, searched them and confiscated an AK 47 assault rifle and ammunition which were found in their possession. They detained the five suspects for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. In an unrelated intervention, Stanford police members conducted foot patrols when they were alerted about suspicious activities at a residence nearby. The members approached the house in Mundel Street where they ensued with a search of the premises upon which they found a small quantity of loose dagga hidden behind the curtains. Further investigation resulted in the discovery of 1423 sachets filled with dagga and cash hidden in a room. They detained a 35-year-old man on a charge of dealing in dagga. Meanwhile Maitland Flying Squad members pursued information of suspects allegedly involved in shoplifting in Claremont policing precinct. The members spotted the suspicious vehicle near a local shopping centre and remained in close proximity of the vehicle until they instructed the driver to stop. Their suspicion was confirmed when the members confiscated clothing items, shoes and crocks which resulted in the arrest of three suspects aged 35,36 and 37. Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone, Hermanus and Wynberg Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
