EASTERN CAPE – The Operation Shanela actions for this month resulted in positive results as 3 412 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from serious to minor offences. Police also managed to seize illicit drugs valued around R 6 178 560 (six million one hundred seventy-eight thousand five hundred and sixty) were found during disruptive operations for the period 01 to 31 October 2024. The high-density operations that were conducted in the eight districts of the province to address the proliferation of illegal firearms in communities and to also fight other serious crimes proved successful, after a total of 139 unlicensed firearms were confiscated among those were three automatic rifles with assortments of ammunition. In some of these operations, the South African Police Service was working with some government entities. From a total of 3 412 suspects that were nabbed, there were some notable arrests: Murder – 217 Attempted murder – 44 Rape – 110 Assault GBH – 1 267 Assault common – 518 Drunk driving – 300 Burglary in residences – 213 Burglary in businesses – 75 Illegal immigrants – 112 Human trafficking – 13 In a single operation this month, police managed to break the spine of the abalone syndicate that was mainly operating in East London area, after three Chinese nationals and a Mozambican were found in possession of 11 197 units of abalone, which was almost fifty percent of the abalone units that were seized for the month, and a total number of units confiscated for this month was 22 574. Police also recovered 107 stolen vehicles for the same period. Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene said, “There are some positives, despite the challenges of mass shootings, which are blemishing the good work that our foot soldiers are doing. It is only through action that we will be able to win back the trust and confidence of the people in the South African Police Service.
