Media Statement PARKTOWN – SAPS Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni flanked by Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Policing Major General Fred Kekana, Acting Johannesburg District Commissioner Brigadier Molefi Tsotsotso, SAPS Orlando Station Commander Brigadier Nonhlanhla Kubheka and SAPS Eldorado Park Station Commander Brigadier Mkhacani Maluleke are this morning holding a media briefing at Eldorado Park police station giving an update on the cases that received media attention and that are of public interest. Lt Gen Mthombeni first gave an update on the Orlando rape and murder case of a six-year-old girl who was brutally raped and murdered on 21 October 2024 at Orlando. When the incident was reported, the Station Commander immediately mobilised a team of detectives and VISPOL together with other stakeholders through the Minister’s Collaboration Agreement. A warrant of arrest was issued for the suspect known as Phethe Sara Simiao on 22 October 2024 and he was eventually arrested last night, 23 October 2024 at Zola 1. He will be charged with rape and murder and is expected to appear before Protea Magistrates’ court on 25 October 2024. For the Johannesburg and West Rand Districts GANG VIOLENCE RIDDEN AREAS (Sophiatown -Westbury, Eldorado Park, Booysens, Langlaagte, Riverlea, Reiger Park, Orlando – Noordgesig and Mohlakeng -Toekomsrus) “Operation Restore” was implemented at the above mentioned policing precinct from 12 March to 12 September 2024 with the aim of reducing gang violence and crimes such as murder, attempted murder, proliferation of firearms, drugs as well as malicious damage to property caused by random shootings. For the duration of six months, this operation has achieved the following successes; Total Arrests: 1 587 * 65 Murder * 87 Attempted Murder * 214 Possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition * 1 221 Dealing and possession of drugs. The Provincial Commissioner further gave an update on violent crimes that are prevalent and provided various ways to stabilise them he went on to give an update about the three districts that are contributing in Illicit Mining namely; Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and West Rand. Operation Vala Umgodi is a National counter operation to destabilise illicit mining. Operation Vala Umgodi yielded the total arrests of 4 796 including 3 657 illegal immigrants, total confiscations of 104 unlicensed firearms including 12 rifles, 2011 ammunition, 1154 various explosives, 1320 kg of gold bearing material.
