Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – On Friday night, 18 October 2024, members attached to the Maitland Flying Squad received information about suspects who were allegedly involved in a business robbery perpetrated in Mitchells Plain earlier, was driving around in Delft. The members spotted the Ford Ranger which had false number plates attached to it, in Delft and pulled it over on the side of the road. Members searched the vehicle and discovered two blank firearms and nine 9mm rounds of ammunition in the vehicle. On further inspection the members found that the firearms were modified to fire 9mm rounds of ammunition. They also found and seized an undisclosed amount of cash found in possession of the suspects. The members subsequently arrested six suspects between the ages of 18 and 24 years on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and business robbery. The vehicle was also seized as an instrument used in the commission of a crime. The suspects will appear in the Bluedowns Magistrates’ court, once they have been charged. Meanwhile, Kleinmond SAPS arrested four suspects in connection with a house robbery which was perpetrated in their precinct earlier. Upon searching the four suspects, they recovered the stolen property as well as a firearm, believed to have been used in the commission of the robbery. The firearm was linked to a robbery of a security guard in Gugulethu earlier. The four suspects face charges of house robbery and the unlawful possession of a firearm and will appear in the local magistrates’ court once charged.
The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile and his management have praised the members for their dedication to rid our streets from the plight of illegal firearms which threatens the safety of communities in the Western Cape.
