Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Five suspects are expected to appear before Ermelo Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Thursday 17 October 2024, for allegedly extorting money from two individuals who are doing business at a mine in Ermelo. According to information, the suspects unduly benefited close to R100 000 from two individuals for a period of five months. According to information, one victim lost more than R30 000 to allow him to operate at a mine. The complaint was victimised for two months, from July to August 2024. When the suspects demanded more money, the victim decided to report the matter to the police yesterday, Tuesday 15 October 2024. The second victim was forced to pay more than R55 000 as protection fee. His ordeal continued for five months from May until October 2024 when he also decided to report the matter to the police yesterday. According to information, the suspects demanded payments yesterday. The victims decided to report to the police as they could no longer afford the money and faced threats from the suspects. An arrangement was made whereby the victims agreed to meet the suspects in Breyten for negotiations. It is reported that during the meeting, the victims were held hostage. On the other hand, police had already instituted investigation that led to a place where the victims were held hostage. Four suspects were arrested on the spot. Preliminary investigation led police to the mine, whereby the fifth suspect was also arrested. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has encouraged victims of crime to report with immediate effect to allow the law enforcement to clamp down on crime as it mushroom. “We are committed to create a safer environment for all including extortion related offences victims,” said the General. The General further commended Ermelo Police for their speedy reaction. Ends
