Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – Akhona Zamxaka (28) appeared before the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on 17 October 2024, facing allegations of police murder. His appearance follows his arrest by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks during the early hours of Tuesday 15 October 2024. It is alleged that on Saturday, 21 September 2024 at approximately 23:15, a police Constable Lwando Msezeni (26), stationed at Kwazakhele South African Police Service, was walking with his partner along Somfula Street Kwazakhele in Gqeberha. During the time, the couple was reportedly coming from the local tavern where they were followed by two unknown suspects wearing balaclavas. Subsequently, while the pair was on the aforesaid street, was allegedly confronted by the suspects and the officer was stabbed in the neck, his cell phone taken then the suspect fled the scene on foot. The police member succumbed to the stab wound and was declared deceased on the scene. A police murder case was handed over to the Hawks for intensive investigation. Thorough investigation by the Hawks a few weeks down the line, led to the arrest of the suspect at Zwide area in Gqeberha on 15 October 2024. Zamxaka appeared before New Brighton Magistrate’s court on 16 October 2024 and the matter was remanded to 23 October 2024 for legal representation. He is remanded in custody. More arrest are imminent as the investigations on the matter is still ongoing. Ends
