Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The Western Cape division of the High Court granted Hawks’ Asset Forfeiture Investigation in conjunction with the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit a forfeiture order. The order was issued on 13 September 2024 and received by the Hawks on 10 October 2024. This emanates from 29 May 2023 when members attached to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation received information regarding abalone allegedly stored at the premises in Bellville. At the premises, members encountered a Chinese National seated in a silver Mercedes Benz. The K9 detection dog reacted positively to the boot of the vehicle, as well as a container at the premises. Upon searching the boot of the vehicle, five boxes containing dried abalone were discovered. A further search in the container was conducted and twenty more boxes of dried abalone were discovered. The value of the abalone seized was approximately R 2.5 million. The vehicle valued at R89 570.00, which was used as instrumentality together with cash(R4 330.00) that was found on scene were seized. A forfeiture order to the total value of R94 000.00 was granted. The matter against Jiang Wu is remanded to 07 November 2024 for trial. Ends
