Media Statement FREE STATE – During the past planned operational week, teams deployed for eradication of illicit mining; Operation Vala uMgodi executed various operational concepts to increase police visibility. The Combat operator’s team arrested the 38-year-old male in possession of gold bearing material and gold processing equipment in Phomolong near Welkom. Gold bearing material weighing at 22, 58 kilograms; gas cylinder, cutting torch nozzle with pipes and regulators, stumping pot and basins were seized by the police. A case of Possession of suspected Gold bearing material and processing equipment was opened at Welkom Police Station. The good collaboration team up between the South African Police Service and Private Security Companies in Kopanong Mine continued with the arrest of the 27-year-old male. The suspect, who surfaced from underground illegal mining was found in possession of seven (7) gold bearing amalgam nuggets, cellular telephones and notes from underground. A case of Illegal Mining, Trespassing on mine area, attempted theft of State minerals and precious metals and Contravention of Immigration Act was opened at Vierfontein Police Station.
Operations continued and operators followed information to a house in Virginia. A number of males driven in from Khuma – Stilfontein and Klerksdorp with the promise to be employed were found stacked like chalk in a single garage. Eight (8) of them were arrested as illegal immigrants.
