Remarks by the Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, at the official handing over of vehicles by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks)

Good afternoon to you all.

It is a great privilege to stand before you today as we witness an important milestone in our commitment to enhancing law enforcement in our country. This official handing over of a new fleet of fifty-one vehicles—purchased through the Criminal Assets Recovery Account (CARA) fund—marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to safeguard the security and well-being of our communities.

The fleet will greatly capacitate our existing resources and enable our police officers, particularly those serving within the DPCI, to better serve and protect our citizens. These vehicles will not only strengthen policing but also improve our ability to respond promptly and effectively to National Priority Offences.

Our government remains resolute in its responsibility, enshrined in the Constitution, to ensure the safety and security of all South Africans. Section 205 of our Constitution states that the police service must prevent, combat, and investigate crime, maintain public order, and protect and secure the inhabitants of our country. This investment in new resources demonstrates our unwavering commitment to upholding these constitutional obligations and providing the necessary tools to support our men and women in uniform.

To our dedicated police officers, we understand the immense challenges you face on a daily basis. That is why, as a Ministry, we are committed to ensuring that you are equipped not only with the training and support you need but also with the essential tools of trade—such as these vehicles—that are crucial in carrying out your duties effectively.

This new fleet will play a key role in improving response times, enhancing operational efficiency, and, most importantly, building trust between the community and the Hawks. When the public sees our officers equipped with modern and reliable resources, they will have greater confidence that the law is on their side and that justice will be served.

However, with these new resources comes great responsibility. I urge all officers who will be entrusted with these vehicles to use them responsibly and efficiently, always in service of the people of South Africa. Remember the oath you took when you joined the service, and continue to act with integrity, discipline, and respect for the law. These vehicles are not just tools for transportation; they are instruments that will enable you to uphold the promises you have made to protect our citizens.

At this juncture, I would also like to highlight some our initiatives as government aimed at enhancing public safety. From entering into Cooperation Agreements with metropolitan municipalities to investing in modernising our forensic and investigative capabilities, we are constantly striving to build a safer South Africa. These efforts are most effective when law enforcement works hand-in-hand with the communities it serves. The fight against crime is not one that can be won in isolation. It requires collaboration, mutual respect, and trust between the police and the people.

In closing, let me remind each of you that the safety of our nation depends on our collective actions. Together, as officers, government, and citizens, we must remain vigilant and committed to a shared vision of peace and security. I have full confidence in our officers and trust that with these new vehicles, we will see even greater strides in protecting our communities. Thank you.
