KIMBERLEY – The ongoing efforts by the Northern Cape Operation Vala Umgodi team resulted in the arrest of four men aged between 32 and 50 for possession of suspected unpolished diamonds on the evening of Tuesday, 08 October 2024. The combat and proactive teams of Operation Vala Umgodi in the Namakwa district received intelligence information regarding a vehicle that was suspected of transporting illegal miners between Kleinzee and Koingnaas. The information was subsequently operationalised, and the vehicle was spotted along the R355 road. The vehicle was stopped and searched, resulting in the arrest of the suspects after the suspected unpolished diamonds were found in their possession. The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, applauded the efforts of Operation Vala Umgodi in the fight against illicit mining in the province, and reiterated that uninterrupted actions focusing on the combating of illicit mining will continue in the province.
