POTCHEFSTROOM – Members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU) that form part of the Vala Umgodi Team were on routine patrol when they noticed a suspicious red Mazda vehicle, with two occupants in Church Street in Klerksdorp Central Business District (CBD) on Saturday afternoon, 21 September 2024. The members approached the vehicle and noticed one of the men, who was the passenger, was fiddling under his seat. The men were requested to step out of the vehicle, and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a firearm hidden under the passenger seat. The men could not account for the firearm and were immediately arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Further investigations indicated that this firearm was stolen in February 1999 in Wilkoppies in Klerksdorp. Edward Ramarumo Dodo Rooi (39) and Mogalatsane Ruphus Leshilo (41) appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrates court on Monday, 23 September 2024. Leshilo was granted R1500.00 bail, whilst Dodo was remanded in custody. Their next court appearance will be on Monday, 7 October 2024. The arrest was communicated to Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, who was looking for Dodo since December 2022. He was linked to two cases of murder and another case of attempted murder reported in Kanana. The first murder was reported on Tuesday, 19 December 2022. Reports indicated that police were called to a house in Kanana, where the body of Carlos Mondane (32) was found lying in a pool of blood. He was shot several times. In a second incident reported on Friday, 29 September 2023, the accused allegedly shot and killed Meshack Kheu (34) in broad daylight at the Maradona sport field in Kanana. Kheu was rushed to a local clinic, where he was certified dead on arrival. In the third incident reported in the early hours of the morning on Friday, 6 October 2023, the accused traced eyewitnesses, who witnessed the previous shooting incident at Maradona sport field. Whilst they were busy preparing for Kheu’s funeral in Thandanani Street in Kanana, Dodo allegedly started shooting randomly towards their shack with an AK 47 rifle, but they managed to flee unharmed. A case of attempted murder was reported. Dodo appeared before the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, for the two murders and attempted murder and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 10 October 2024. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated members of the NIU and the Anti-Gang Unit for their hard work that led to these arrests. He said police will continue to work hard to ensure that criminals face the full might of the law. Ends
