The National Prayer Day is an annual ceremony held in honour of the fallen heroes and heroines of the South African Police Service who unfortunately lost their lives whilst performing their duty and to seek wisdom, and daily protection from God. The ceremony was graced by the presence of the representative of Executive Mayor of Vhembe District, Local Mayors, Molemole Local Municipality Councillor, Tribal authorities, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing Major General Jan Scheepers, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General Christine Morakaladi, District Commissioner of Vhembe District, Major General Eddie van Der Walt, Provincial Heads, Station Commanders, Sister Departments, Community Policing structures, Religious Communities, Saps members from various stations, and units including the brass band and other stakeholders. The Vhembe District Commissioner, Major General Eddie van Der Walt, welcomed the esteemed guests and everyone in attendance. The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General Christine Morakaladi took the attendees through the background and outlined the purpose of the ceremony as a heartfelt commemorative moment to honour the fallen heroes and heroines who lost their lives while serving communities of this beautiful province. The awakening sermon was delivered by different pastors and reverends from various denominations. They prayed for issues that included the management of the Saps, Police safety, the well-being of operational members, acceptance of the police by the community, reduction of gender-based violence and crime reduction. A moment of silence was observed in honour and remembrance of our fallen heroes and heroines. The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Visible Policing, Major General Jan Scheepers in his address, pointed out a sad reality that police officers wearing a uniform, while departing to work daily, there is a high possibility that they might not return home safely. “Today, we come together, united in our plea for God’s intervention, protection, and blessings over our lives and the essential work we do. This event holds profound significance for me as it resonates with my experience as a police officer and the realities we face daily in law enforcement.” Major General Scheepers highlighted the scourge of police killings and the cancer of corruption that has infiltrated our ranks. “We must stand together and condemn these actions unequivocally. Each life lost is a reminder of the sacrifices made in the line of duty, and every act of corruption is a betrayal of the trust bestowed upon us by our communities.” “Let’s humble ourselves before the Lord and seek his wisdom and serve our communities with pride and integrity,” added Major General Scheepers. While the District Mayor of Vhembe was represented by Councillor Sinyosi. During her keynote message, she called upon community members to support the police in the fight against crime in their respective areas. “Let’s face reality, when our children are involved in criminal activities or maybe victimized, we seek help from the same Police, but yet we chase them, and instead, we protect criminals in our communities. The police are human beings, just like us. As the government, we do not undermine your efforts. We confidently salute you all.” “Pastors let us continue to pray for our police officers across the province,” she concluded. #Police_safety_matters Ends
