Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The SAPS in Mpumalanga continues to urge members of the public to prioritize their safety and refrain from engaging in activities that may put their lives at risk. This plea comes in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred in Mhluzi near Middelburg on Thursday afternoon, 26 September 2024, resulting in the death of a man due to an explosion. While the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident are still being probed, preliminary investigation suggests that the man, who is yet to be identified, was reportedly handling a bag that contained suspected explosives among other items. Tragically, an explosion occurred while he was carrying a bag, causing injuries and ultimately leading to his untimely death. This recent occurrence is a cause for concern as it follows another similar one that took place a month ago, on 25 August 2024 also in the area of Mhluzi. During that incident, two individuals were reportedly attempting to extract copper from what is believed to be a mortar round to suddenly explode, resulting in the death of a 40-year-old man and living another man (44) with serious injuries. The SAPS is working diligently to thoroughly investigate these incidents and ensures the safety and security of all residents. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi advised members of the community to report any suspicious object to the Police rather than exposing themselves to danger. “We implore members of the public to exercise caution and avoid handling any unknown or suspicious objects they may come across,” said the General.
