Media Statement PARKTOWN – An intelligence driven operation resulted in the arrest of six males who were allegedly driving around, collecting money from the shops owned by foreign nationals in Akasia and Soshanguve, Tshwane, on Thursday 25 September 2024. During the time of the arrests, the suspects were found with more than R46, 000.00 that they allegedly collected within six hours. When asked what the money was for, the suspects indicated that it was for the safety of the shop owners. The suspects, who are aged between 21 and 41, are expected to appear before Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 27 September 2024, facing charges of extortion. On the 25th of September, 2024, a disruptive operation was arranged and executed by police from Crime Intelligence and Public Order Policing. The team conducted an observation and noticed two vehicles stopping at various tuckshops and approaching the shop owners. After following the suspects for a few hours, the police intercepted. Upon searching the vehicles and the suspects, police found a substantial amount of cash that was allegedly collected from the shops. Police are calling on all the shop owners who fell victims of this extortion syndicate to come forward and open criminal cases. Ends
