Media Statement from the Office of the Minister of Police PRETORIA – The Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, today convened the first MinMec meeting following the appointment of the new Ministry. In attendance were a number of Members of Executive Councils (MECs), representing the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape, and the Western Cape, alongside Senior Managers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other key entities within the portfolio. The meeting’s agenda addressed several critical issues, including the Draft National Policing Policy and the Integrated Crime and Violence Prevention Strategy; both documents are crucial to strengthening the fight against crime and ensuring a safer South Africa. The Minister emphasised the urgency of finalising these frameworks to enable more efficient and effective crime-fighting measures. In light of the recently released crime statistics, which underscore the on-going challenges faced by law enforcement, the Minister reiterated the need for enhanced policing strategies, calling for greater collaboration between provincial authorities, SAPS leadership, and other stakeholders to ensure that communities feel safe and protected. The Minister further stressed the importance of integrating advanced technology into policing operations to bolster crime detection, prevention, and response efforts, stating: “In a world of rapidly evolving criminal tactics, technology must play a central role in enhancing law enforcement’s ability to anticipate, track, and neutralise threats to public safety. The ultimate goal of the Ministry is to ensure that every South African feels secure in their homes, on the streets, and in their workplaces. The challenges we face require a unified effort across all levels of government, and today’s MinMec meeting marks the beginning of this renewed, intensified approach to crime prevention and public safety. The Ministry remains committed to fast-tracking these urgent reforms and working closely with all provincial counterparts and law enforcement agencies to build a safer, more secure future for all South Africans.” For more information, contact Ministry Spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi on 076 523 0085 or Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, Spokesperson for the SAPS on 082 040 8808.
