POLOKWANE – Operation Vala Umgodi, which is the SAPS initiative to fight illegal mining, continues to make significant impact within our communities. Evidently on Tuesday, 24 September 2024, the SAPS Operation Vala Umgodi member represented by Lt. Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi paid a courtesy visit to Makhado Community Radio station under Vhembe District with the objective to address the community about the significant impact of preventing the illegal mining The country is facing challenges of illegal sand and mineral mining of resources by illegal miners who are destroying the environment within our villages by digging areas such as along the roads and inside the tributaries. The significant infrastructure is eroded, and it is under immense threat for the future generations and on the brink of collapse. Issues addressed on the radio slot included the following: * It is illegal and punishable by the law to mine without a permit. * What constitutes illegal mining of sand and minerals. * What to do to stop illegal mining. * Impact of illegal mining on the country’s economy. * The threat of human and animal life posed by open holes. The community had the opportunity to ask questions, and they were adequately addressed. Through operation Vala Umgodi, police are aiming at closing the net on this evil act of criminality. Ends
