South Africans on social media – including outspoken personalities like Renaldo Gouws and The Kiffness – have shown their support to businessman Jan Braai after he was accused of racism in a viral video.
The TV personality and “Braai Master” were accused of discriminating against a non-white person while handing out “Kerriewors rolls” outside a Food Lover’s Market in Cape Town.
However, a snippet of CCTV footage has since “debunked” these allegations.
JAN BRAAI VIRAL VIDEO: WHAT HAPPENED?
In a clip widely shared on social media, Jan Braai offered free “Kerriewors rolls” to Food Lover’s Market shoppers in Cape Town.
The video shows the braai enthusiast handing out food to several white men and women and even giving gifts to children. In the background, a coloured male seemingly waits for his turn.
The video cut off before the male was given his boerewors roll.
In the comments section, many South Africans have accused Jan Braai of being “racist.”
However, Food Lover’s Market claimed that the clip was taken out of context. The retailer also provided CCTV footage, which rubbished the allegations of racism.
In the clip, Jan Braai is seen handing out his “Kerriewors roll” to the coloured male in a blue tracksuit.
@foodloversmarket We know you were all concerned that the gentleman in the tracksuit didn’t receive a boerewors roll from @Jan Braai ♬ original sound – Food Lover’s Market
It posted: “We know you were concerned that the gentleman in the tracksuit didn’t receive a boerewors roll from Jan Braai. We wanted to offer you a different angle of the moment. So we tracked down the full CCTV footage and can confirm he received his boerewors roll.
“As mentioned in our first statement, the original video was shared in the spirit of the day we had with our Willowbridge Food Lover’s family – that anyone who visited the stand would receive a boerewors roll for free.
It added: “We hope this CCTV footage comforts you that we did not exclude or single out anybody in what was a celebration of everyone’s heritage.”
The video was reposted on Jan Braai’s Facebook and TikTok accounts.
SOUTH AFRICANS DEFEND ‘BRAAI MASTER’
On social media, many South Africans have been defending Jan Braai following the emergence of a CTV clip. Some have even called out media house News24 for their criticism of the braai connoisseur.
Joining in was outspoken muso The Kiffness, who tweeted: “You can never cancel Jan Braai.”
In another tweet, he added: “Thank you, @janbraai, for being a true South African legend.”
The Eating The Cats hitmaker even teased a jingle about the incident.
