Media Statement POLOKWANE – Limpopo Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses Unit has made significant strides in combating crime and securing hefty sentences for perpetrators. On 20 September 2024, three convicts received sentences totalling two life imprisonment and 110 years imprisonment in the Waterberg and Capricorn districts. A 39-year-old, Frans Thabo Bambo was sentenced to two life terms by the Mahwelereng Regional Court for raping an eight-year-old girl after snatching her during a wedding celebration in March 2022 at Mahwelereng. The victim was playing with other children when the accused took her to an abandoned house where he raped her until the following morning. Detective Sergeant Ramokoloane Leshaba investigated the case. Meanwhile, The High Court in Polokwane sentenced Jabu Thabang Baloyi, 34, to 25 years’ imprisonment for murder, 25 years Rape, 13 for robbery. The 58-year-old woman was brutally killed in April 2023 in Magatle policing precinct. The accused raped the victim and thereafter burned her body and stole her cellphone and house keys. The victim’s charred remains were discovered by a community member the following day and police were alerted. The suspect was arrested at his residence where the victim’s robbed items were recovered. The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Chuene Selolo, during the investigation, managed to link the accused with three cases of Rape that occurred in the same precinct. The accused broke into the house of a 78-year-old woman in March 2022, raped and robbed her of cash. He was sentenced to 21 years’ imprisonment. In another case, the accused was sentenced to eight years for raping a 27-year-old woman who went to collect water from the local river. The last case took place in May 2020. A 35-year-old woman was driving to her residence in the early hours when she parked on the side of the road to relieve herself. Three suspects, including the accused, hijacked her car and accused dragged her to the bushes, and raped her. The suspects fled the scene using the victim’s vehicle which was later recovered. He was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. The sentences will run concurrently. This means the accused will serve 25 years’ imprisonment. Lastly, Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court sentenced 22-year-old Simon Makgamatha to an effective 10 years imprisonment for raping a 35-year-old old woman in March 2021 in the Tinmyne policing precinct. The victim was walking home when the accused dragged her to the bushes and raped her. The case was investigated by Sergeant Tina Matsimbi of Mokopane. Bail was successfully opposed in all these cases. “We commend the hard work and dedication of these investigators, whose achievements reinforce our commitment to fight against sexual offenses and gender-based violence in all corners of the province. ” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
