NORTHERN CAPE – The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, hailed the life sentence conviction handed down to a domestic violence accused in Sutherland. The court heard that on 26 November 2022, the accused Chrisjan Brandt (33), reported the murder of his girlfriend to the police, stating that she had died the previous evening after an altercation with an unknown woman. Upon further investigation, it was ascertained that Brandt was responsible for the death of Karin Klein, who was 27 years old at the time of the incident. The investigation revealed that Klein had been beaten with a plank of wood and a table leg. On Friday, 20 September 2024, Brandt was sentenced in the Calvinia High Court to life imprisonment on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. General Otola reiterated that the policing and investigation of domestic violence related crimes remains a priority for the SAPS in the Northern Cape.
