MADEIRA – The strategy of introducing foot patrols with police members in civilian clothes have started to bear positive results in the hot-spot areas of the CBD in Mthatha, after two robbery suspects were arrested within minutes following a business robbery incident yesterday 21 September 2024. It is alleged that on Saturday, 21 September 2024 around 13:00, a police Sergeant who was in civilian clothes conducting foot patrols witnessed a robbery of a clothing store in progress at York Road, Mthatha, and he immediately summoned his colleagues for assistance. Within few minutes, the area was flooded with SAPS and KSD Ls Enforcement members, and the two suspects were arrested not far away from the crime scene. Two firearms were confiscated, one licensed and the other was not licensed. Members also found cash and two pairs of school shoes. A serial number on the unlicensed firearm was filed off, and is to be sent for ballistic testing. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the two men are originally from Libode. The two suspects aged 30 and 36 are due to appear in the Mthatha magistrate’s court on Monday, 23 September 2024 on charges of business robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and contravention of the Firearms Control Act. There is a possibility of additional charges at the later stage of the investigation.
