18 September 2024 – The South African Football Association’s Technical Department concluded a very busy week of launching the next group of SAFA regions, to host the FIFA Talent Development Scheme U15 Girls Inter-LFA Leagues.
SAFA Technical Director Walter Steenbok, and his team travelled around the country to launch the second edition of the girls’ league. The team began in SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay on Friday, 13 September, before heading to SAFA Cape Town on Saturday, 14 September, they were then welcomed with open arms out in Mafikeng, at SAFA Ngaka Modiri Molema on Tuesday, 17 September 2024.
Steenbok reported that numerous SAFA regions had expressed curiosity about the FIFA U15 TDS Inter – LFA League ever since its initial pilot in 2023, with many declaring their eagerness to host the league in their regions.
“We made it clear to everyone during the SAFA Congress, that last year was a pilot, and we promised to bring the league to more regions, and here we are. We are very intentional in the projects we are implementing and have done a lot of research on the state of women’s football in the country; therefore, we want to bring as much football as possible to all our regions; added Steenbok.
“We are very grateful to the FIFA Talent Development Scheme for the support they have given us. Through this initiative we have managed to educate more female coaches. 84 more female coaches will attend the D License through this second edition of the U15 Girls Inter-LFA Leagues.
We are also looking forward to our second edition of the U15 TDS Interprovincial Tournament. This year we are excited that both boys and girls will be participating in the tournament;” concluded Steenbok.
