Media Statement CAPE TOWN – The determination by the Western Cape police to decrease crime in our communities and to put perpetrators of the law behind bars yielded positive results when they arrested several suspects for possession of ammunition, drugs and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. On 14 September 2024 at about 08:40, Ravensmead Crime Prevention Unit members received information from the community regarding a suspect that was selling drugs at a premises in Rose Street, Ravensmead The members followed up the information and found the suspect in possession of 74 mandrax tablets and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime at the afore-mentioned address. A 42-year-old man was arrested for the possession of and dealing in mandrax. On the same day at about 09:30, the members followed up on information received from the public regarding a suspect that had ammunition hidden in a chips packet. They immediately followed up the information and found the suspect at a premises in Aster Avenue, Uitsig. Upon searching the chips packet, members found six .38 Special rounds of ammunition. A 24-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition. Both suspects are due to appear in the Bellville and Goodwood Magistrates courts on Monday, 16 September 2024, on the mentioned charges. In an unrelated incident, Bishop Lavis SAPS members attended a shooting incident in Bishop Lavis area on Friday, 13 September 2024, around 23:00. Upon their arrival, the members chased two suspects who ran away when they saw police approaching. As the suspects ran away towards the flats in Bishop Lavis, they opened fire on the members. Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Unit (members caught up with them and arrested both suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, respectively. A .38 Special revolver with five rounds and a 9mm Beretta with three 9mm rounds were confiscated and handed in as exhibits. The suspects aged 34 and 38 are linked to a local gang grouping in Bishop Lavis. Both suspects are to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate court on Monday, 16 September 2024, on the mentioned charges. On Friday, 13 September 2024, Philippi East Crime Prevention members were patrolling Lower Cross Roads when they noticed a suspicious looking male walking in the road. They stopped and searched him and found two 9mm rounds, keys, and various bank cards in his possession. A 30 year old man was arrested for the Illegal possession of ammunition and possession of property suspected to be stolen. He will appear in the Athlone Magistrates court on Monday, 16 September 2024, on the mentioned charges. Also, on Friday, 13 September 2024, Anti-Gang Unit members deployed in the Manenberg area were doing stop and searches and visible foot patrols in the Heideveld area, when they found an abandoned .357 Magnum revolver with 23 x .357 rounds underneath the staircase in Linda Court, Heideveld. The firearm and ammunition were handed in as exhibits, and an enquiry was registered for further investigation. No arrests were made. Ends
