Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Operation Shanela continues to squeeze crime in the province and resulted in a multitude of successes achieved during disruptive actions executed between 09 and 15 September 2024 throughout the Northern Cape. The actions focused priority crimes including drugs, illegal firearms, contact crimes, trio crimes and aggravating robbery. The actions have also seen more boots on the ground with intensified blue light patrols in hotspot areas. Multi-disciplinary teams in all five districts namely Namaqua, Frances Baard, Pixley Ka- Seme, ZF Mgcawu and John Taolo Gaetsewe(JTG) apprehended and arrested 231 suspects for crimes ranging from illegal possession of firearms, dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, robbery, murder, attempted murder, rape, assault and burglary. In one of the actions on 15 September 2024, members of Kuruman Public Order Policing Unit pounced on a 35-year-old male at his house in Gantelang Village in Kuruman, after they found two unlicensed 9mm firearms with ammunition in his possession. Detectives in the province traced and arrested 316 wanted suspects for serious crimes, including business robbery, murder, rape and assault GBH. The teams conducted searched at identified premises, stop and searches, high visibility patrols, compliance inspections, roadblocks, and vehicle checkpoints. A total of 6 790 persons and 3 720 vehicles were stopped and searched. Several unlicensed liquor outlets were closed, and a substantial amount of alcohol was confiscated. A substantial amount of drugs, counterfeit goods, and dangerous weapons were seized during the actions. Through Operation Shanela we are executing our Constitutional obligation to keep all inhabitants in the Northern Cape safe and secure and we will continue to act without fear, favour and prejudice to realise our vision.
