Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Deputy Minister of Police, Ms Boshielo together with the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola of the Northern Cape, attended the rural outreach programme of IPID in the Dithakong village in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district on 13 September 2024. The Chief (Khosi) of Dithakong village hosted the VIPs at the Royal Residence prior to the briefing and the main session that held at the tribal offices. Mrs Jennifer Ntlaseng, the Executive Director of IPID, outlined the purpose of the day, and Mrs Makabesi, the Deputy Director of IPID, explained the mandate of IPID, to the attendees. Brief presentations of their respective organisation’s and entities mandates were delivered by the chairperson of the JTG District CPF, the local Municipality and the Provincial Commissioner on behalf of SAPS and the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in the Province. Lt. Gen Otola emphasised the good relationships SAPS have secured with the rural communities in the province. She appreciated the support and assistance that SAPS is receiving from the Kgosis in this area and alluded to the SAPS launch of the Traditional Policing Concept in Camden in December 2021 and the launch of the Rural Safety Strategy in May 2023, both in the JTG District, which is a clear indication that SAPS are prioritising our communities in the rural areas. The Deputy Minister Boshielo addressed the community focusing on various aspects. She urged the community to respect the police and parents to take responsibility to discipline their children. Minister Boshielo elaborated on the unregulated operating hours of taverns and substance abuse, which were the main contributors to GBVF, ill-disciplined youth, teenage pregnancy, and school safety. She further emphasized that drug dealers’ days are numbered. We will continue fighting against trading in stolen goods, stock theft and corrupt Chiefs. She reiterated that corrupt police members will be dealt with accordingly. She also appreciated and thanked IPID for the outreach programme and for assisting with the fight against criminals. The Deputy Minister assured the Chief and Kgosis, and the community at large that the Ministry of Police and SAPS are tired of crime and will not tolerate and co-govern with criminals. She informed the audience that SAPS and the Ministry are doing their best and working tirelessly to address the evils of all crimes. She praised the Provincial Commissioner for doing an excellent job in the Province and further stated that together, they will deal harshly and appropriately with all criminals and that we want to reclaim our country. The community engagement offered the community an opportunity to engage and raise issues of concern with the panel, which comprised of various stakeholders. The panel responded to issued raised by the audience in an effort to address the concerns and find amicable solutions. Ends
