Media Statement KWAZULU-NATAL – On Thursday, 12 September 2024, the Durban High court sentenced Anwar Jeewa (64) for Culpable Homicide and Contravention of Medicine Control Act. It is alleged that in November 2017, Milos Martinovic, then aged 26, sought professional assistance for his prescription drug addiction. He approached Anwar Jeewa, who purported to be a medical doctor and a specialist in drug addiction rehabilitation and was admitted to Mindsalive Rehabilitation Centre in Westville, Durban. Tragically, a few hours after the commencement of the Ibogaine- assisted detoxification procedure, Martinovic passed away. As a result, a case of murder was registered at Westville police station. The case docket was assigned to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation for further probe. An intensive investigation was conducted and post-mortem investigation established that it was a drug related death. On 5 January 2018, the accused was arrested and charged with murder, contravention of various sections of the Medicines and Related Substances Act. The accused appeared in court several times, until on Thursday 12 September 2024, where he was sentenced. He was sentenced as follows: Count one (1) Culpable Homicide: He was sentenced to three (3) years correctional supervision with condition confining him to his residence, except for his work as a dentist and attending religious gatherings. He was also sentenced to 25 hours community service per month, to render his services as a dentist to inmates at the Westville prison. Additionally, he was ordered not to leave the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the borders South Africa without permission of the National Commissioner of Correctional Services. Count 2 to 5: Contravention of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act: he was fined fifty thousand rands (R50 000-00) to be paid on or before 1 October 2024. Or to serve five years’ imprisonment. Count 6: Operating an unregistered Treatment Centre, fined R10 000-00 or one year imprisonment, which is wholly suspended for 5 years on condition that he is, during the period of suspension, not convicted of similar offence. The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and extolled the investigating Team for the good work. Ends
