Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Detectives in the province have this past week been assuring the communities that justice is being served for victims of contact crimes reflecting on the number of convictions secured. The High Court in Carnavon recently sentenced 36-year-old Jerome Jeremia Witbooi to life imprisonment, following the rape of his 48-year-old partner in Carnavon on Monday, 28 November 2022. The Court heard that the accused and victim were in a relationship, when the accused sexually assaulted the victim. The victim managed to free herself after the attack and sought assistance from the police. The accused was subsequently arrested and charged for rape. The Court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment for rape and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended the Investigating and Prosecuting team, Detective Sergeant Marlon Eksteen and State Prosecutor, Mr Corrie Jonker for being meticulous in presenting all evidence to Court, ensuring that those that are hell-bent in violating women’s right are brought to book and incarcerated. She further thanked the pivotal role played by the Non-Profit Organization that presented evidence in Court to highlight the impact rape cases have on society. Ends
