Media Statement GAUTENG – Hendrik Kunneke (58) has appeared before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 September 2024, for fraud after he was arrested on Thursday, 05 September 2024 at Eastgate mall in Johannesburg. The suspect, Kunneke visited the Eastgate mall’s Standard Bank branch on Thursday, 05 September 2024, pretending to be an account holder of a bank account with R3.7 million. When the impersonator failed the security questions and claimed he could not use fingerprint verification as his fingerprints were damaged, the matter was then reported to the branch manager who escalated the matter to the fraud department. The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation where further investigation revealed that the Identity Document (ID) produced by the impersonator is different from the one captured on the banks system. During the arrest, the (ID) and cellphone of the suspect were seized. Kunneka made his first appearance on Monday, 09 September 2024 at the Germiston Magistrates Court for fraud (account takeover) where the matter was postponed to Wednesday, 11 September 2024 for a formal bail application.
