The South African Police Service (SAPS) is hosting its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to men and women in blue who died in the line of duty between 01 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

39 officers are being commemorated during the National Commemoration Day held at the Union Buildings on 01 September 2024.

Three females, 36 males

29 were shot and killed,
-
Five died in vehicle accidents

Two were hit by blunt objects
-
One was stabbed and killed
-
One was burned and succumbed to injuries
-
One fell on an embankment and succumbed to injuries

111 officers were killed in the last financial year, 39 on-duty, 72 off-duty
POLICE KILLINGS: CONVICTIONS
-
Twenty-one (21) members were killed in the 1st quarter of 2024/2025 with sixteen (16) of those having been killed whilst off duty and five (5) whilst on duty.
-
Eighteen (18) arrests were effected of which nine (9) were effected on the twenty-one (21) cases reported for the period while nine (9) were on eight (8) cases registered prior to the 1st quarter.

Twelve (12) accused were convicted on four (4) cases and sentenced to combined period of one hundred and thirty-nine (139) years and six (6) months imprisonment.

One (1) accused person was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a metro-police official.
EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND WELLNESS

The SAPS has Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) service available to members 24/7, 365 days a year
-
Members available are chaplains, social workers and psychologists
-
Members attend debriefing sessions within 48 hours of attending serious and violent crime scenes

SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE EDUCATION TRUST (SAPSET)

The South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET) was officially established on 23 November 2010
-
The objective is to provide financial and resource support to the children of fallen heroes and heroines who died in the line of duty
-
SAPSET believes that by investing in these children’s education will help secure a better future for them.
-
To date, SAPSET has assisted 1631 children
-
21 have graduated
-
155 have matriculated

To date, SAPSET raised over R17 million

Recently, SAPSET raised over R6 million during the annual National Golf Championship that took place in Cape Town earlier this year.

For the 2024 academic year, SAPSET assisted 139 beneficiaries to the amount of R 1 838 288

In March 2024, 12 SAPSET beneficiaries in Grade 11 and 12 attended a leadership and development camp where they were offered psycho-social support and prepared and signed up for online study support to better prepare them for matric final exams
DANGER ALLOWANCE FOR OPERATIONAL MEMBERS

Operational members’ danger allowance was increased from R400 to R700 as from April 2022.
