ZWELITSHA – The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene strongly condemns the recent attack of a police officer at Mandela Park, Mthatha this morning, 06 September 2024 at about 07:15. According to the information, a 42-year-old Warrant Officer attached to National Intervention Unit, was on his way to work driving his vehicle when a known male started shooting towards him. The member immediately stopped his vehicle and retaliated and the suspect fled on foot. Police swiftly responded and on investigation they later arrested the 45-year-old suspect. The police officer is unharmed while the suspect sustained injuries and taken to hospital for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the investigation. However investigation is continuing. The suspect is due to appear at Mthatha Magistrate Court soon on a charge of attempted murder. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene appreciates the efforts by law enforcement officers in ensuring that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice. She emphasized that an attack to our police officers is an attack on the state and the community we serve, therefore justice should prevail. Ends
